I started running in 2011, and lost 71 pounds in 7 months. I was successful because I figured out how to quiet the voices in my head. Fear, procrastination and self-doubt were the loudest, but there were others. And I still hear them.

This tumble log is about those voices.

Run with Mac

The beginning

In recent months, I’ve let my routine slip.

The voices were quiet for a while. Then I heard a knock at the door. I opened it just a crack. Before I realized what was happening, excuses flooded my world. It’s cold this winter. You’re busy at work. J is pregnant. You can do it tomorrow.

I should have ignored them, and put in the work anyway. But I didn’t. So it’s time to begin again.

Photo

How do you know if you’ve given your absolute best in a...

How do you know if you’ve given your absolute best in a race?
This is the second year that I completed the LBI 18-Mile Run. And what a difference a year makes!

Last year I struggled for much of the event, battling cramps, hot weather and a rookie’s approach to training. I stopped to walk in the later miles more times than I can remember. Afterwards I felt nauseous, thanks to a poor hydration strategy before and during the run. But I battled my way to the end, and was absolutely thrilled that I finished.

This year? A completely different story.

I started slow and comfortable, monitoring my pace and (more importantly) heart rate along the way. I carried a water bottle to make up for the gaps in water stations in the later miles of the race (an unexpected gift: a friend of my in-laws met me at mile 12 with a fresh water bottle; that act of kindness spurred me on for the next few miles). And I continued to hone my fueling strategy, which I think is ready for November 4th.

This time, I ran through the finish line feeling strong. If I finish the marathon feeling like I did yesterday, I’m going to be thrilled.

But that’s easier said than done. More on that later…

The LBI 18-Mile Run (greeting my family at 90th Street).

The LBI 18-Mile Run (greeting my family at 90th Street).

Always do your homework!

Always do your homework!

Tired routine

Alarm Clock: It's 5:00 am! Let's go...it's time to run.
Me: OK, OK...I'm awake.
Alarm Clock: You sure?
Me: Yep. I'm getting up in a minute.
AC: I don't believe you. Good thing we have a back-up alarm.
Me: Don't need it. Here, I'll even turn it off.
AC: Whoa! Back off, mister. Turn that off and you'll be out before you make it back to the pillow. I know your game.
Me: [turning off the alarm] Don't be such a ninny.
AC: If we've done this once, we've done this a thousand times. You always oversleep and wake up in a panic. So let's go, before it's too late.
Me: [silence]
AC: Hey, are you listening?
Me: [silence]
